5A1 Art Space | Special Course for the Greater Bay Area: Photography Workshop on "Exploring the Secrets of the Past"

Release time:2025-05-08 Author:5A1

Origin: A foreigner is coming to China to "trace his roots"!

Glenn Porter is an Australian-born art photographer, associate professor at the University of New England, and a PhD in art. While working in photography and forensics, he was surprised to find that he had Chinese ancestry. A genealogical DNA test three years ago finally confirmed this origin. According to family history, his third-generation great-grandfather immigrated to Australia from southern China during the Australian gold rush in the mid-19th century and ran a shop there to make a living. Although this ancestor started a family in a foreign country, his marital status is still shrouded in mystery, especially the specific information about his wife's identity, which has never emerged from the dust of history.

During his exploration, he found that his ancestral home was in Zhongshan, Guangdong. Although he could not find the detailed address of his ancestral home and his relatives in China, he wanted to go to Zhongshan and Guangdong to see the current situation of his ancestral home. So he applied for a research project at the university and received strong support from the school. Coincidentally, he ecountered the "Greater Bay Area Nine Cities Photography Plan" that Professor David Lai was about to open. When Lai was studying photography in Australia in his early years, Glenn Porter taught him part of the course content on photographic composition. After learning about his plan, Lai decided to work with Glenn Porter to merge the fourth and sixth stops - Zhongshan and Guangzhou - into one photography workshop, combining the original courses with Glenn Porter's ongoing art projects into the workshop.
